Reddit and Sysomos – What Does This Mean For Redditors?

Lance Concannon Lance Concannon, Marketing Director, Europe

We recently announced that Sysomos will provide users with access to a much deeper level of Reddit data. As many of us here are long-standing members of the community (almost 10 years in my case) we think it’s important to share a better understanding of what this exactly means for Redditors.

You can read the full announcement here but, in short, we’ve added Reddit conversations to our analytics platform, alongside data from Twitter, Facebook, discussion forums, blogs, and other sources. Organizations use our platform to analyze and understand what people are saying about brands, products, ideas and all kinds other topics. Our customers include businesses, public sector organizations, educational and academic establishments, and non-profit organizations.

The data we have included in our platform is only that content which is already published on Reddit and easily available using the site’s own search feature. We’ve simply made it easier for people to identify and analyze alongside those other data sources. We do not share, and do not have access to any personal information relating to a Redditors’ account.

So, the bottom line is that this agreement will in no way impact your experience of Reddit and that’s important to us. The data we have access to is being used only as a research source to help people understand how topics are discussed online, and spot rising trends. You should not expect to see brands start crashing into Reddit threads, or using more overt marketing tactics on the site – we don’t want to see that, because we love the community just the way it is. Nobody wants to see marketers go wild on Reddit.

Ultimately we think this is a good thing for Redditors because it provides the site with a new revenue stream that helps it to thrive without intruding on the community, its privacy, or user experience in any way.
